“Fairytale of New York” Star Shane MacGowan Has Passed Away
Shane MacGowan, a musician and singer best known for being The Pogues’ lead man, passed away at 65.
The artist, who would have aged 66 on Christmas Day, had been suffering from viral encephalitis since December 2022, a rare and possibly fatal illness that causes the brain to swell.
The Pogues’ creator and singer-songwriter Shane MacGowan combined punk’s fierce snarl with Irish musical traditions in the 1980s.

His wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, said on Instagram to announce his passing,
“Shane will always be the light that I hold before me, the measure of my dreams, and the love of my life.“
Although MacGowan’s cause of death remained undisclosed initially, it was reported that he was discharged from the hospital last week following a period of critical care.
MacGowan had experienced health problems in the previous few years.

MacGowan was treated for an infection earlier this month at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. MacGowan has experienced many health problems in recent years.
Ahead of his forthcoming birthday on Christmas Day, he was discharged from the hospital last week. Among those who visited him were Terry Woods and Spider Stacy, his old bandmates.
The singer had been in and out of Dublin’s St Vincent’s Hospital for months due to viral encephalitis, a potentially fatal illness that causes brain swelling.

“I don’t know how to say this, so I am just going to say it,”
“Shane…has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother, Therese.”
A message confirming MacGowan’s passing with,
“The deepest sorrow and the heaviest of hearts” was also posted on The Pogues’ Instagram account, speaking for Clarke, his sister Siobhan, and his father Maurice.
They reported that he passed away quietly in the early hours of this morning, surrounded by his loved ones.
McGowan’s Health Conditions Before the Death
Due to years of drinking and drug abuse, the Irish icon’s poor health in recent years forced him to use a wheelchair and require the help of his wife and caretaker at home.
In his 1980s peak, Shane—whose 1987 hit Fairytale of New York became a global Christmas classic, selling millions of copies—was well-known for his hard-partying lifestyle, slurred speech, missing teeth, and on-stage meltdowns.

Artist Nick Cave called MacGowan,
“a true friend and the greatest songwriter of his generation” after the two collaborated on a 1992 recording of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World.
Mary Lou McDonald, the president of Sinn Fein, was one among the people who paid tribute, calling MacGowan
“a poet, a dreamer, and a champion of social justice.”
and grieving the loss of “one of its most beloved icons and the world one of its greatest songwriters” for Ireland.

“Shane brought his musical unique style to all corners of the world, and his music will continue to be enjoyed for generations.
